Clomid (Clomifene)

General Use

Clomid is a non-steroidal anti-estrogen. Its mechanism of action consists of specific binding to the estrogen receptor in the ovaries and pituitary gland. In patients with low estrogen levels in the body, it has an estrogenic effect, and in patients with high estrogen levels, it has an anti-estrogenic effect. Small doses increase the secretion of gonadotropins (prolactin, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and interstitial cell-stimulating hormone), stimulating ovulation; at high doses, it slows down gonadotropin secretion. The overall effect of Clomid is to stimulate ovulation and prepare the body for pregnancy. This medication can also be used in male patients with infertility due to low sperm production.

Dosage and Use

Clomid is administered to stimulate ovulation: 50 mg once daily at bedtime, starting on the 5th day of the menstrual cycle for 5 days (if there is no cycle – at any desired time). If there is no effect (ovulation does not occur within 30 days), increase the dose to 150 mg/day or extend the course to 10 days. Take exactly as prescribed, do not take the medication in larger amounts.

Precautions

Before using Clomid, inform your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to clomiphene, liver disease, mental depression, or thrombophlebitis. This medication may cause visual disturbances, dizziness, or lightheadedness, so be especially careful if you need to drive or operate machinery requiring high concentration.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity, liver or kidney failure, metrorrhagia of unknown etiology, ovarian cysts, genital neoplasms, tumor or hypofunction of the pituitary gland, endometriosis, ovarian failure combined with hyperprolactinemia, pregnancy.

Possible Side Effects

Along with allergic symptoms such as swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, or hives, some patients may experience the following conditions:

• Ovarian enlargement, which manifests as abdominal or pelvic pain
• Hot flashes
• Nausea
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Blurred vision
• Headache
• Abnormal vaginal bleeding

Drug Interactions

Inform your doctor and laboratory staff about all medications and herbal products you are using if you are being treated with Clomid.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but not if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. If that is the case, skip the missed dose. Do not try to make up for a missed dose by taking an extra dose.

Overdose

If you suspect that you have taken too much of the medication, seek medical help immediately.

Storage

Store Clomid in a dry place away from sunlight at room temperature between 15-30°C (59-86°F).
